Sam and Mandy Weaver
Prior to establishing Churton, Sam honed his skills for over two decades in the wine industry including the retail, production and technical arenas. As a consultant winemaker both overseas and in New Zealand, Sam developed a deep understanding and respect for place. Coupled with a degree in microbiology, Sam’s ability to coax the very best out of land and barrel is unparalleled. Sam’s lineage is farming and he draws from this as Churton refines their biodynamic approach to grape growing.
Sam is determined to create wines that capture the intensity of Marlborough flavour and aroma but refine them with length, texture and finesse. Winemaking stems from the vineyard and Sam’s primary role is managing the micro biology of soil and canopy.
As general manager, Mandy is at the pointy end of their family business. Leading the Churton team, growing distributor relations and developing marketing plans leaves little down time but Mandy also sits on the executive board of Organic Winegrowers New Zealand. Care taking New Zealand’s future sustainable growth is close to her heart.
Before Churton, Mandy’s BA (Hons) in Modern Languages saw her translating in the tourism sector in London’s Kings Road. After settling in Marlborough, Mandy was involved in the local technical institute (NMIT) including managing their Wine Food and Tourism program, teaching papers within the Business and Bachelor of Commerce programme and tutoring Viticulture and Oenology diploma students.
